Communication and language are critically important in the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) because they are foundational for all other areas of learning and development. Strong communication skills enable children to express themselves, understand others, build relationships, and learn effectively.
The acquisition of language is the single most important and complex skill a child learns in their first five years. It is one of the biggest predictors of success for children as they move on to school and later in life.
Sharing stories with children is crucial for their development, fostering literacy, emotional growth, and social skills. It builds a strong foundation for future learning by enhancing language, communication, and a love for reading. Stories introduce new vocabulary, improve listening skills, and help children understand the connection between spoken and written words.
In Reception our focus on Communication and Language, and the different stories that we share helps to inform our adult-led writing activities. This story / book-based approach provides the children with comprehensive curriculum coverage, engaging children to write with a clear audience and purpose.
Below are some of the stories we explore during Reception. We will also explore stories that the children themselves suggest or bring in to share
